Ritornano GetDeb e PlayDeb, presto i pacchetti anche per Ubuntu 13.04

Ritornano GetDeb e PlayDeb

Riaprono GetDeb e PlayDeb i famosi repository per installare o aggiornare applicazioni e giochi non presenti nei reposiory ufficiali di Ubuntu.
A confermarlo è proprio Christoph Korn, amministratore del progetto, dal blog ufficiale segnalando la riapertura del portale e la segnalazione di alcune novità.
Korn ha segnalato di voler fare un sondaggio online per decidere quali pacchetti integrare in Ubuntu 13.04. Tramite votazioni gli utenti potranno decidere quali applicazioni voler utilizzare anche nella prossima Ubuntu 13.04.
Le applicazioni preferite dagli utenti verranno inviate anche alla community Debian chiedendo di poterli integrare nei repository ufficiali cosi che verranno sincronizzati anche su Ubuntu.

Getdeb.net e Playdeb.net tornano a sorpresa!

Chiude GetDeb e PlayDeb, se ne va uno dei più famosi repository non ufficiali per Ubuntu

GetDeb e PlayDeb

Ubuntu è una distribuzione Linux che per motivi di sicurezza non aggiorna le proprie applicazioni ma le mantiene fino alla versione successiva.
Tranne che per alcune applicazioni, un’applicazione riceverà solo aggiornamenti di mantenimento che ne correggono i bug potremo però aggiornarla attraverso i vari repository di terze parti.
GetDeb e PlayDeb è un progetto che offre un repository contenente applicazioni e giochi aggiornati o non presenti nei repository ufficiali di Ubuntu. Utilizzati da moltissimi utenti, i repository GetDeb e PlayDeb non verranno più supportati.
A causa del tanto tempo richiesto per mantenere aggiornate sia le applicazioni e giochi il progetto GetDeb e PlayDeb verrà abbandonato.

Addio a GetDeb e PlayDeb un crash sui server ne decreta la fine

Arriva una brutta notizia per tutti gli utenti Ubuntu e derivate. A causa di un crash sui server che ospitavano GetDeb e PlayDeb e la conseguente perdita del database l’autore del popolare servizio di repository esterno per Ubuntu ha deciso di interrompere completamente il progetto.
Il motivo è anche dal ricercarsi nella notevole mole di lavoro che l’autore era costretto a sobbarcarsi da solo e che giustamente doveva convivere con il suo vero lavoro in real. Ci troviamo quindi dinanzi ad una situazione simile a quella che accadde tempo fa con l’autore di Ubuntu Tweak.
Questo fa riflettere sulla necessità di creare sempre una community attorno ai progetti GNU/Linux perché senza la possibilità di gestire il lavoro in gruppo in caso di problemi i progetti si stoppano.
Ma leggiamo direttamente le parole che l’autore di GetDeb e PlayDeb ha scritto sulla pagina di Google+ del progetto:
After the server crash where also the GetDeb and PlayDeb database was lost and given the fact that GetDeb and PlayDeb now have too many packages to be handled as a one-man-project I decided to discontinue GetDeb and PlayDeb.
In the last years I have spent so many hours in the project that now it is just too much for me to maintain beside my usual job.

But this does not mean that all the work in GetDeb and PlayDeb is lost. The repository is still completely mirrored, e.g.: http://mirror.informatik.uni-mannheim.de/pub/mirrors/getdeb/ubuntu/pool/ (Google search: ‘quantal-getdeb-testing intitle:”Index of”‘ should give you a good list).
Also all the package script (i.e. the debian directory) for every package in the precise and quantal repository are available in my GitHub repositories:

* For special upstream watchers there is this repository: https://github.com/ckorn/Upstream-watchers

The web interface of both GetDeb and PlayDeb is called apt-portal which is specialised for viewing the information in an apt repository:

And finally there are the scripts and little helpers of the automated build process:

The entire repository of Debian packages can be downloaded with this script:

It is currently 84GiB in size so please only download it if you really want all the packages. If you just want some simply use a mirror.

Let me also thank everybody of you for the trust you had in GetDeb and PlayDeb as an unofficial repository. I think GetDeb and PlayDeb were one of the greatest unofficial repositories for Ubuntu packages.
I think to spend some time to bring some of the packages in the official repository.

Come potete leggere l’unica cosa positiva è che i pacchetti attuali sono comunque presenti nei mirror così come sono ancora presenti su Github gli script per generare i pacchetti per Precise e Quantal.
Speriamo che qualcuno possa subentrare nel progetto e magari in un interessamento da parte di Clem e del team di Linux Mint che come sapete li aggiungono (o meglio li aggiungevano) ai repository consigliati sulla loro distro.
